Historically, the castle was known as the "Genoese Castle" due to the Genoese flag that once flew over it during the Middle Ages. The Genoese inscribed their state's emblem on its two towers.

The castle was a key defensive outpost guarding the entrance to the Bosphorus. It also served as a military barracks during the Ottoman Empire, with records suggesting that Sultan Bayezid I resided there at times.

Although many of its walls and towers have crumbled over the centuries, the main entrance remains intact. Additionally, the castle's strategic location has made it a popular tourist attraction in Turkey, with a view of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge (opened in August 2016), the longest bridge in Istanbul, enhancing its appeal.
