oros Castle in Istanbul

Yoros Castle, also known as the Genoese Castle, is one of Istanbul's most prominent historical landmarks. Perched atop the village of Anadolu Kavağı, it boasts a strategic location overlooking the Bosphorus Strait and the Black Sea. With its massive walls and defensive towers, the castle offers a glimpse into the Byzantine era, alongside the surrounding natural beauty.

History of Yoros Castle

Yoros Castle is recognized as the only remaining Byzantine fortress in Istanbul. Archaeological excavations have revealed much of its history, and its ruins and surrounding walls still stand today.

Historically, the castle was known as the "Genoese Castle" due to the Genoese flag that once flew over it during the Middle Ages. The Genoese inscribed their state's emblem on its two towers.

The castle was a key defensive outpost guarding the entrance to the Bosphorus. It also served as a military barracks during the Ottoman Empire, with records suggesting that Sultan Bayezid I resided there at times.

Although many of its walls and towers have crumbled over the centuries, the main entrance remains intact. Additionally, the castle's strategic location has made it a popular tourist attraction in Turkey, with a view of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge (opened in August 2016), the longest bridge in Istanbul, enhancing its appeal.

Design of Yoros Castle

Yoros Castle is a symbol of Istanbul's green landscapes and is the only Byzantine fortress built in the area. It features massive walls, observation towers, and defensive forts built to protect it from invasions. While some of its defensive towers have been lost over time, the castle, which stretches over 500 meters, still offers stunning views of the Bosphorus Strait.

Yoros Castle is located where the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea, north of Joshua’s Hill, atop the village of Anadolu Kavağı, on the Asian side of Istanbul. To get there, it’s recommended to follow a local map for precise directions.
